I often find that technical obsolescence of the companies main product can result in a value trap. It is one of the main dangers of buying tech companies on the cheap. You can end up with a company in terminal decline. Take a look at Concord Camera, the disposable camera maker, for a good example of this.

Ctreit,

I guess even people who buy funds and such have so many options that they risk falling in the value trap. They could use it too.

This is a very good list for people who want to pick their own stocks in their investment account. It is all too easy to fall into a value trap, which has happened to me many times in the past, too. I am getting better in avoiding them though.

That's what gets me most of the time too. Things that I already own, seem to be gems when I see them trading at half the price that I bought them. Doesn't always work out though!

I confess, I'm not immune to value traps.... and yes, I do look to increase my holdings of stocks I already own that have been beaten down. I guess it's best to ask "if I didn't already own this stock, is it a good buy today"? and keep asking that.
