This is the 3rd post in a series of posts covering CIBIL Credit Information Report and CIBIL Credit Score. You can access the earlier two posts here:

CIBIL TransUnion credit score – role in a loan application process

CIBIL Credit Information Report

By now, you must have become well versed with the contents of a Credit Information Report and the significance of a credit score. Now it is time to know how you can access your report and know what your credit score is.

You can access your CIBIL TransUnion Score along with the full Credit Information Report for a nominal fee of Rs. 470. You are just required to fill a request form with some basic details like Name, Address, Date of Birth, Gender, Contact Details etc. and keep the self-attested copies of your Identity Proof and Address Proof ready.

You can see the application here.

Online payments can be made either through Net Banking platform of a bank or through a debit card/credit card/cash card. The net banking facility is available with 33 banks as of now. You will get a unique CIBIL registration ID and transaction ID as a confirmation on successful completion of your online payment. After the payment is made, you need to answer 3-5 questions about any of your loans or credit cards to authenticate your application. You’ll then be required to provide the soft copies of your identity proof and address proof.

If your application gets authenticated, you’ll receive your credit score and CIR in your e-mail in about 2-4 days. However, if the authentication fails, you need to take a printout of the receipt for online payment and mail it to the below mentioned CIBIL address along with your proofs.

Consumer Relations: Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited,
Hoechst House, 6th Floor, 193 Backbay Reclamation,
Nariman Point, Mumbai 400 021, India.
Tel.: 022 61404300, email: info@cibil.com

Offline Application

If you decide against going online, then you will have to take a printout of the application form, duly fill it and get a Demand Draft (DD) made worth Rs. 470. Again attach the copies of your identity and address proofs along and send it to the above mentioned address.

Also, if you wish to purchase only your Credit Information Report, then you can do so by having a DD of just Rs. 154 and follow the above mentioned process. But, in that case, the process would be offline only because there is no provision to get it online without asking for your credit score.

You also need to sign the form in order to confirm your requests. Note that the address proof (except passport) – bank statement, telephone bill, electricity bill or credit card statement should not be more than 3 months old and should be in your name matching with your name in your loan/credit card account or on your PAN card (if you do not have any loan or credit card).
Like many of us undergo physical health check-ups, I think one should get his or her credit score checked at least once a year. It will keep you aware of your credit health and make you take necessary steps to correct it whenever required.

So what are you waiting for now? Just visit the CIBIL website and get your score checked. I’m sure there will be many surprises in store for many of us. Just share your score and experiences here with us so that we have a platform to understand these things in more detail.

  1. I applied for a SBI home loan and they reported that there is a write off of Rs 3245 against some credit card taken in 2003. So, I purchased the CIBIL report. I had a horrible score of 647 only. Below is my credit history.

    1. ABN Amro card: Write off Rs3245
    2. SCB card: No outstanding
    3. ICICI bank card: negative outstanding of Rs 700. It means I paid the bank Rs 700 more
    4. ICICI bank home loan: Currently running and never an outstanding
    5. Axis Auto loan: closed
    6. SCB auto loan: closed
    7. HDFC Credit card: up and running fine.

However there are some huge enquiry made:
    1. HSBC home loan: 35 lakhs
    2. BOB home loan: 30 lakhs
    3. Now the SBI home loan: 10 lakhs (under processing in SBI)

    My query is
    1. why is my score so abnormally low
    2. is there anything I can do to make is closer to 750

    thanks

  2. I got my CIBIL score yesterday. A healthy score of 829 !! Thanks for this article, since I did not know that we could apply online.

In my CIBIL report, they have not considered my home loan ( taken from Union Bank of India) at all. Probably public sector banks are not part of the members who are reporting.

      1. Hello Shiv,

My home loan ( fully paid-up and closed recently ) is much more recent than some of the credit cards that were listed on the report. Back in the good old days of 2004-05 when getting a credit card was easier and a fad, I had three credit cards and all are listed in the report. Thankfully, I got out of that habit and closed all the credit cards successfully and maintaining only one for the past 7 years.

        1. Hello Mr. Ashok… What you are following is the ideal way to keep your credit history clean and that is showing in your credit score of 829. Also, I think UBI has not reported your home loan history to CIBIL, probably that is why it is not showing in your report.

  3. Thnx sir,
    I have one more q.-
Maine last mnth SCB credit card apply kiya wo reject ho Gaya reason puchha to bataya cibil ki wajah se hua usase pahle HSBC ka apply kiya wo bho reject ho Gaya reason cibil me problem hai but I have already 2 another bank card and 1 personal loan is regular last 2 years CC also regular aur due date se pahle pay kar deta ho pls help kya main bank k against complaint Karu ya mere unscure product hai is wajah se cibil score kam ho Gaya hoga aur Kya main PL close kar do to wo normal ho jayega please sugest me.

    1. Hi Mohd,

Aap ke paas valid reasons hone chahiye for your complaint against HSBC and SCB for their rejections. Mujhe nahin lagta ki aise valid reasons aap ke paas hain. Ye companies credit card business mein hain and definitely wo bhi apna business grow karna chahte hain. In companies ke paas valid reason honge aap ka case reject karne ke.

You are right, unsecured loans se bhi aapka case weak ho jaata hai. Mere liye ye batana possible nahin hai ki PL close karne se aapki application approve ho jaayegi but bank ka risk definitely thoda kam ho jaayega.

  4. Hi Shiv,

I have been working out of India after finishing my education abroad. I came back 6 months back after getting an opportunity here. I started applying for credit card from last month back and all of them have rejected me. The last application for which I got rejected finally let me know that the reason was a low CIBIL score. Could you suggest how can I raise my CIBIL score considering I have no credit cards and none of the banks are issuing it to me?

  5. Hi,
My CIBIL Score is 829. Only 1 CC is in Settled status. I have already approached the bank people to close the same. It is 717 INR due. will close the same in 2days n will get a NOC also.
One CC card got closed in 2010 year but there are few DBT/SUB under DPD section for the 2008 year. Even after that i got a credit card by showing NOC. Now i am maintaining all my credit cards very well. Score is also 829.
Now i am going for LIC home loa,.. Is there any chance of Loan rejection bcoz of the DPD with DBT/SUB for the year of 2008???/

    1. Hi skahthp… 829 is a very good score and Rs. 717 for a settled credit card account is too small an amount for your loan application to get rejected. But, a few DBT/SUB in your report can play spoilsport and might make LIC HL team to scrutinize your case.

Apart from your credit score, final sanction is dependent on many other factors, primarily being the loan to value ratio and EMI to income ratio. I personally think that you should get the loan sanctioned based on the info you have provided here.

      1. Thanks a lot Shiv.
I called to the SCB bank people, 1st time they told like the card is in inactive status(closed in 2006) they were unable to see any dues, they checked from back end team and confirmed it 717 due bcoz of some charges and all. When i called 2nd time they were saying there is NO DUE…and no need to pay anything and they asked to send a mail to card.services@sc.com with my full details they are ready to provide NOC with in a week (i am staying out side india so they were ready to send a mail).

Now my question here , Is there any chance of loan rejection after having all theses NOC and one closed account long back with DBT/SUB/STD status.????
        Thanks in Advance.

        1. It is good to know that you have SCB’s green light now! But, nobody can tell you the probability of loan rejection with perfect accuracy. So, I think the chance of loan rejection is still there but with a very low probability. Analysing your credit report would have given me more scope to solve your query.

          1. Please find the below my understanding. Correct me if i am wrong……
1). DPD will never change for the closed Accounts.
2). DPD will display “Date of Closed” to “Date of Opened/Disbursed” (up 36months only) for the closed accounts. Ex: Card exist from 2006 to 2008. Then DPD will display for the same period only. if there are anyDBT/SUB/STD it will remain the same and will never change bcoz the account got closed.
3). DPD will display Date reported or Certified to Date of Opened (for 36 months only) if the Account is in Active /Open status.

if i am correct in the above scenarios……Less Chances of getting Home loan for the 2nd scenario because the DPD will never change.
3rd Scenario is fine because as going months also will change so DPD will also moved.
Is there any solution ofr 2nd scenario folks?
Please correct me if i am wrong.

            1. Your credit report has factual information as reported by the respective lenders. So, facts and actual information will never change. Only misreporting by the lender or human error can cause something which is not factual.

For the closed accounts, you cannot get the DPD changed from DBT/SUB/STD to ‘000’, unless they were wrongly reported due to human errors.

Also, if your payment history is improving, then your credit history improves. But again, it cannot change the past records and the lenders go through the whole of your credit history.

  9. Hi Shivji,
Once again- how can i get my CIR online from cibil website? they are asking for my pancard number which i dont have one so far. I am an NRI.
Once again thanking you for this blog…

    Faez

    1. Thanks Faez!
PAN card is not mandatory to get your credit report. It is just a “recommended identity proof”. As you do not have the PAN card, you have the option of filling the identification number of your Passport or Voters ID or Driver’s License.

  10. Hi,

Iam prabhu. i have got an offer from HDFC bank for pre-approve loan of Rs. 67000.

Banker agent has informed collected all my documents.

After 3 days they are saying. some of the credit card payment has been delayed by you.

  11. Hi,
Good Job Shiv and your support in this blog.
I haven’t availed any loans from any of the lenders so far. What will be my credit score and CIBIL report.

    Thanks and regards,

  13. Hi Shiv,

I took education loan from Andhra Bank for 44,000 and with interests the amount is very huge now.
Bank is offering me OTS (One Time Settlement) reducing the amount now.

But am worried about my cibil score, will OTS mess my cibil score.
Please guide me, what shall i do..?
Shall i Pay the complete amount.. ??

  14. Hi Shiv,

    Great Info.
I have two credit cards. In those there was outstanding amount to pay. Due to my financial reasons I have not paid the amount. I have not paid the amount since last 3 years.
I am planning to pay the amount now.
    1) If I clear the amount for the both the credit cards now, will it be possilbe to increase my credit score ? If yes how much time it will take?
Some of my friends told me that if we clear the outstanding also there is no use. credit score wil not be increased.
    Kindly let me know.

    1. Thanks Dhanu!… To err is human, but to repeat the mistake or not to improve on it is foolish. If you feel that you did a mistake earlier, then it is better to get rid of its shadow as soon as possible. Even if your friends are right and it does not improve your score immediately, I would suggest you to take the right path and pay off the whole balance as soon as possible. I do not want to guess the time but sooner or later it will help you to improve your credit history.

  15. Dear Shiv,

I went through most of the above posts and they are very informative. I am in the process of of a home loan application and awaiting my CIBIL report.

I have a good credit record for last 3.5 years with no negatives as far as I can think. However, I had personal loan payment delays and late fees on credit cards during 2005 to 2007. I have paid all the outstanding dues in full during the closure period and should not have any current outstanding other than a well maintained credit card.

While I am yet to receive my credit scores, do you think my poor records during 2005 – 2007 can influence againt this loan approval even though I had settled dues during 2008 and have been maintaining all transactions very well since last 3.5 years.

I had also applied for another credit card a year ago from another bank and had received the same as well (Well maintained too)

Also, even if I get a decent credit score of 700 +, do you also think other factors like an excellent monthly income with no other loans and minimal expenses would contribute towards approval/rejection of home loan application?

While I wait for the report and loan application status, do you think if there is anything else I could do right now (contact bank to validate or apply home loans at multiple banks at the same time)

    Regards,
    Paul

    1. Thanks Paul!

It is very difficult for me to forecast whether you’ll be able to get a home loan or not based on the info provided. Even if one’s credit score comes out to be an excellent one, it is difficult to tell a borrower if he/she meets the lenders’ eligibilty criteria.

“an excellent monthly income with no other loans and minimal expenses” would definitely serve in your favour and increase your chances of getting a loan. This one I’m sure of.

There is nothing you can do to improve your score or eligibility in a very short period of time. But, if you find any discrepancy in your credit report, you can definitely raise a Dispute Request online to get the discrepancy corrected and thereby improve your score and chances to get the loan with ease.
